“Son, I have something to tell you …” (dramatic pause) “… cranberries are not manufactured in supermarkets.” Sounds exaggerated? Perhaps less than the reality that many children have not ever seen a cow like that produces milk they drink. Neither milk production in the grocery store and there is a chain of manufacture of blueberries in the back room. If you’re family holiday in Asturias, go to the El Malain and they see the fruits on your plants, pick them up and eat them at home.
The farm is a fruit the Malain where the ceiling is the sky, the walls are the field and the plastic trays with fruits are, well, plastic trays with fruit. But only after self choose which you want, without being able to prove any abuse, and save them.
The children who saw him do were delighted with the activity to pick blueberries and blackberries and took it, as so many things in that stage of life as a game.
Although, if you think about it, who, having the old you, do not like to walk between villages bushes with their hands and pick the most desirable berries? And guilty about doing on the farm of a neighbor, for we know that eventually we will pay, and cheaper and more natural than in a supermarket.
The “run” from the farm to the visitor, the consumer, is very simple. After overcoming the concern spend the correct intersection (located on the old road between Gijon and Villaviciosa , N-632 + AS-256, and you have to take two deviations from it) and left the car in the car park, which can be fill a weekend of good weather.
A few meters away, we went to a small building attached to the main building of the house and there will be Marta, at least in the afternoon when I went, which will give us instructions and equipment, plastic boxes go putting berries and fruits that want to take us.
While some people real picnic baskets from home brings in Malain you provide boxes that carry plastic containers (which also get them), more than one if you want to separate the fruits and berries, and are which full and pay at the end. The instructions, because there is nothing standardized, which are usually of fruits and berries are more mature and where to find the best specimens.
As everything in nature has its season, less than ever evergreen trees naked of leaves, this is what we can find from June to September: Blueberries (June 15 to August 10), Raspberry (June, July and September), red and black currant (July), Mora (July 15 to September 31), Cherries (July) and Apple board (August and September).
I’m no expert, so I can not tell you the accuracy of those dates for time (how they were warm or rainy the previous weeks) I guess it can influence them.
Armed with your box, or with your package, you wandering the halls in the bushes, which are marked with a sign indicating the type of product you find in them. As in my case I can not presume to differentiate well beyond not confuse an apple with a blackberry, is a welcome help.
The farm is relatively large (about 2.5 hectares) and can walk slowly through it without anyone bothering you, but close at 8 pm in summer. I assure you that time flies surrounded by much greenery and tranquility, as the nearest road traffic has a testimonial.
If you’re with kids, there is a play area which includes a pair of goals, a small tree house where the walls are the trunk and sufficient prao to entertain them when they finish picking fruit. Parents also have benches to sit and chat in the shade, it’s easy to forget that the sun can also burn Asturias.
Before leaving, get to spend the same place where we got the plastic containers to pay everyone that we have filled at a price much lower than in a supermarket just 2 Eur. There also have a very shop products made with berries and fruit from the farm, such as jams, juices and liquors.
The latest fad I gave me, and I recommend, is to buy an ice cream right there homemade raspberry or blueberry , which only costs 1.50 Eur. Sit on the bench outside, let the sun caress you neck and saboreadlo slowly.
