CONFUSED ABOUT HOST AGENCIES

We have all heard about the home based independent travel agent phenomena — it’s now the fastest growing segment of the travel industry. The recent travel seminars and conferences we have attended in the past year have been comprised of 80%-plus home based travel agents.
A great majority of home based agents entering the profession lack the credentials to deal with travel suppliers and sell travel to the consumer. Enter the Host Agency.
Host Agencies have the credentials that the home based agent requires, plus can offer support — especially for newer agents — and higher commission rates than those agents can obtain when going alone.
As in any industry that is growing at the rate of home based travel agents and host agencies, our industry is attracting what we called “carpetbaggers” in the old days.
“Carpetbaggers” come in all shapes and sizes and today they are commonly referred to as “card mills” and “multilevel marketing firms.” I’ll give you an overview of each.
“Card mills” are those agencies that promote their own photo ID card with promises of steep discounts in all areas of travel. The process is legal but the business is outside the mainstream travel industry. You generally receive no support and face possible embarrassment if confronted by a travel supplier or reservations person who recognizes your card as a “scam.” You can do much better with a legitimate host agency without having to fork out $495 for fees.
The multilevel marketing travel agency is a little more difficult to recognize, but I will attempt to point out some of its traits. Originally, they were a form of the old “pyramid scheme” — and some still are. They would offer you benefits which grew as you brought people into the fold with the process being duplicated over and over.
Generally, those people who entered the “pyramid” at the top benefited, while the latecomers rarely saw any benefits.
Now, you are seeing new, self-proclaimed host agencies enter the travel marketplace with variations of these marketing schemes.

You can spot these so-called marketing host agencies by identifying some of the same traits used by the MLM’s in the past:

1. An overuse of individual testimonials, of which many are solicited;
2. Using “hyped” wording in their advertising and E-mail broadcasts that get your attention;
3. Promises of wealth and benefits in the travel business. I saw one of these agencies presenting a seminar where they used the sound of an  old cash register each time the demo screen changed. How tacky!
4. High pressure tactics, usually at seminars or trade shows;
5. Using the printed media to offer staged interviews about how good the product is;
6. Promising high commission rates without telling you about setoffs and deductions.

These marketing firms offering themselves out as host agencies generally lose considerable money. If any of these firms go out of business, and they all might eventually, it will give the industry a black eye, including the legitimate host agencies. There will be literally thousands of home based agents owed commissions they will never receive.

And finally, here are a few things you should look for in a good agency.

1. How long has the host agency been in business?
2. Is it properly licensed and bonded?
3. Will you receive the needed support?
4. Does your host agency communicate with you?
5. Is the host agency up to date with technology?
6. Are you able to sell travel with any supplier?
7. What is your commission based upon and what deductions are made from your commission check?
8. Do you have an IC agreement with your host agency?
Of course, this was intended to give you a list of some of the more important items. It comes down to doing your homework when choosing a Host Agency.
It’s not about how large or what the costs are of joining a host agency, but instead it’s all about you being comfortable with your choice.

Host Agency Travel Agent Programs
Home-Based Travel Agents VS. Referral Travel Agents

There is a big difference between the “home-based or independent travel agent” and the “referral travel agent”. Many host or referral agencies market programs where you can be an associate or independent agent. We feel you should know the “naked truths” when it comes down to deciding which direction to go. There is a place in this world for both as long as the interested travel agent is presented the information fairly and accurately by the marketing host or referral agency.

REFERRAL TRAVEL AGENT

Many referral agencies market at least two types of referral agent programs. One program is to offer commissions up to 50% based upon the referral agencies 10% base commission. You would also receive compensation for signing up new agents. You would also receive some commissions from the referrals of the agents you have signed up. If this program appears to be a form of pyramid scheme, it is, in our opinion. There are many people who participate in these programs. If this makes sense to you - go for it. Just be careful the scheme won't be challenged by the legal authorities.

The other program markets the photo ID card issued to their agents promising great discounts and huge savings on all your personal travel through the use of this card. These referral agencies are known in the travel industry as “card mills”. The card displays the agents picture, name and agency along with the agency's IATAN number.

Many of the cards appear strikingly similar to the real, coveted IATAN photo ID card. Again, you are offered up to a 50% share of the agency's base 10% commission or a total 5% commission. The use of these “scam” cards are at your own risk. If a reservations or front desk person is attentive, they will call you on the authenticity of the ID card. Be aware of potential embarrassment every time you present this card for a discount or upgrade.

The following reasons, in our opinion, make sense to become a Referral Travel Agent:

  1. You do a lot of personal or business travel and are not really interested in becoming a serious travel agent.
  2. You are an affluent person and those potential discounts on hotels and air upgrades will certainly add up.
  3. You wish to add a little additional earnings to your main job or retirement income.
  4. You have many friends and family and would like to be paid for your efforts.
  5. You are not sufficiently motivated and really don't want to establish a successful travel business.

HOME-BASED TRAVEL AGENT

These are the more serious and motivated people who wish to be part of the client's total vacation experience. Planning the vacation, booking the vacation and following through after the client's memorable trip makes it all a worthwhile experience for everyone. This independent agent works at his/her profession both on a part or full time basis with the same passion.

Home-Based Travel Agents generally use their own business name and have a local occupational license. They offer the same services as a store front travel agency but without the heavy overhead or employees.

Home-Based Travel Agents use the Host Agency for their marketing connections, back office and accounting support, and their accreditation numbers and memberships which give them access to the travel suppliers and booking portals. There is also a lot of “hand holding” with the newer agents. Agents associating with Host Agencies simply earn more commissions as opposed who go it alone.

The relationship between the Home-Based Travel Agent and the Host Agent is client to client. You are never obligated to just one Host Agency at a time but it would not be prudent to have more than one if you are new to the industry.

CORAL SAND'S REFERRAL AGENT PROGRAM

Coral Sands Travel, America's Host Agency, gives you the option to function as either a Referral Travel Agent or a Home-Based Independent Travel Agent.

. We charge a fee of $295.00 and $15.00 for shipping materials or a total of $310.00. This also includes your spouse. There is an annual renewal fee of $150.00.

We do not issue our own photo ID cards. We will provide you with the support needed to obtain your own coveted IATAN and/or CLIA photo ID card when you qualify for them. These are the two major photo ID cards recognized around the world for discount travel and “fam” trips.

Referral Agents receive 25-40% of all commissions including overrides for your referral sales. We know of no other host or referral agency that pays you the override portion of the commission.

Coral Sands is primarily a Host Agency for Home-Based Independent Travel Agents. We added the Referral Agent Program because we have received  requests to offer such a program.  We are a “pure” Host Agency because unlike most Host Agencies, we do not handle any inside sales. All leads and consumer sales from our website are assigned to our Independent Agents. In addition, our Independent Agents have the option of handling the sales from our referral agents. This creates the opportunity for our Home-Based agents to earn more income and at the same time introduce the referral agent to someone either living in his part of the world or has specialized knowledge of his travel interests.
